One of the weaknesses of the 6.9 idi
engines is that the head gaskets are prone to fail under high-boost
conditions. One of the causes is the inability of the stock head bolts
to hold the head firmly on the block with the increased cylinder pressures.
One way that aids in avoiding this is by using head studs instead of bolts.
Because of the extreme cylinder pressure
present in a idi, studs are also mandatory when building any type of
high-output indirect-injection engine.
All fasteners in our head stud kit feature a
220,000psi tensile strength. The kit doubles the holding power of the
heads compared to stock head bolts.
The DPS stud kit uses
a premium grade 8740 alloy that is rated far superior to “aircraft” quality
studs out there.
The
studs are also thread rolled after the heat-treat process. This
technique gives them about 10 times better fatigue strength than studs that
have been threaded prior to the heat-treat (as done by competitors). It's a
more expensive process, but the end results make it worth it.
