MOST
PEOPLE WHO purchase a diesel Pick-up Truck do
so to take advantage of their reliability, economy and longevity. The only
disadvantage is that, without a turbocharger, they are low on power,
especially at high altitudes. Towing, climbing hills or even just trying to
maintain highway speeds can be frustrating experience. Turbocharging solves
this problem by increasing the amount of air delivered to the engine. By
increasing the volume of air in the engine, sufficient oxygen is then
present to complete the combustion process which increases horsepower and
reduces smoke. Even with increased fuel delivery, sufficient air is
available to complete combustion. there are in fact, many reasons to
turbocharge your diesel.
MORE POWER increased towing ability, reduced exhaust
emissions and instant throttle response are just a few of the benefits. Most
importantly it improves drivability, making your truck more enjoyable to
operate. No longer does towing need to be dreaded. Now, hills, long grades,
and passing opportunities can be accomplished with ease.
WHY A BYPASS TURBO? The bypass turbo has many distinct
advantages over a non-bypass turbo, particularly in the light truck
applications. By using a bypass (commonly called a "wastegate") turbo, turbo
lag and exhaust smoke are virtually eliminated. In fact the ATS
Turbocharging System exceeds current California Air Resource Board tough air
quality standards. Engineered to match engine requirements, the bypass turbo
offers fantastic throttle response throughout the entire engine rpm range.
The bypass turbo creates manifold pressure just above idle for instant
throttle response. The bypass valve then opens at a predetermined manifold
pressure level letting the unneeded portion of the exhaust flow freely. This
eliminates turbo lag without sacrificing mid and high engine rpm range
performance.
IN THE ATS SYSTEM we use a large bypass valve that is
engineered to accommodate the engine exhaust gas volume. By using a large
bypass valve and a large final exhaust expansion chamber we maintain very
low exhaust back pressure. This low back pressure results in increased
combustion efficiency. Combined with a recommended fuel settings, up to a
50% increase in rear wheel horsepower can be achieved.

The ATS air filter design
utilizes a free flowing paper element with a pre-oiled foam panel for higher
filtration efficiency and a longer life.
The
ATS pressure chamber has definite design advantages. The volume being small
enhances turbo response and helps alleviate turbo lag along with having
excellent air distribution between cylinders. The pressure chamber uses
viton 0-ring seals between the machined turbo compressor discharge and
pressure chamber and intake manifold. The 0-rings make a clean pressurized
positive air tight seal.

Simplicity of the new ATS
wastegated turbo is shown in the turbo mount casting which has two machined
0-ring grooves. This casting which functions as the oil drain for the turbo
returns oil and utilizes an 0-ring as the seal arrangement. This casting
also seals the hole in the rear of the intake manifold with an 0-ring where
the anti-depression valve was previously located. This steel casting also
functions as a fixture to mount the turbo to the engine.

The by-pass (wastegate) valve is
opened by an actuator, which in turn allows exhaust gases to by-pass the
turbine wheel. This results in a regulated boost level and reduced back
pressure, increasing engine efficiency.
The ATS "Y" casting balances the
engine's exhaust pressure through means of the close radius bend in the
casting. This matches the close radius bend in the stock left bank exhaust
manifold. Initially balanced exhaust pressure greatly enhances throttle
response and adds to engine life.
The
ATS System uses a gradually tapered inlet casting which is void of any
bends. This results in increased exhaust gas velocity and very low cylinder
back pressure. It is, in fact, the lowest in the industry.

The turbo outlet housing with
expansion chamber is very unique. This outlet housing allows for quicker
wind up of the turbo and is a prime contributor to the efficiency of the ATS
Wastegate Turbo System. Advanced Turbo Systems highly recommends our free
flowing 3" mandrel bend exhaust system which is manufactured from aluminized
steel tubing to eliminate corrosion. A turbo elbow housing and free flowing
3" exhaust system is also available to upgrade the Ford factory 2 1/2"
system.
THE VEHICLE
also remains emissions legal in all 50 states. Fuel delivery, which affects
horsepower and smoke, are determined by a snap throttle opacity test making
a pyrometer unnecessary. Simply stated exhaust opacity is the amount of
visible exhaust smoke the vehicle emits. By setting fuel delivery in this
manner, you are assured of excellent performance and a clean running
vehicle. This is one time when clean air standards make the consumer the all
round winner. Greatly improved performance, significantly lower emissions
and smoke are all benefits you will enjoy with an ATS Turbocharging System
WHY AN ATS Turbocharging System? As the designing engineers
with Navistar on the Ford factory turbo, we know turbochargers. Advanced
Turbo Systems also believes in being totally honest with our customers.
Questions about warranty, power gains, serviceability, or any other concerns
you may have will be answered with Your best interest in mind.
YOUR ATS SYSTEM was designed to the highest engineering
standards available with emphasis on quality and reliability. Thousands of
hours of dynamometer testing by Navistar confirm these results. In addition
no other kit will outperform an ATS Turbocharging System. The ATS System
will produce as much if not more torque and horsepower per cubic millimeter
of fuel delivered than any other system on the market. Dyno tests show that
the system that comes closest to our new by-pass turbo is our discontinued
non-by-pass version. And please don't be fooled by staged comparisons. More
horsepower is always available by increasing fuel delivery, however, our
recommended settings ensure engine reliability and durability.
SERVICE IS AVAILABLE at ATS Dealers across the U.S. and
Canada. Also as a result of our association with Navistar and Ford, most
Ford Dealers are familiar with the system. The ATS Wastegated Turbocharging
System is emission legal in all 50 states. California E.O.# D-171-7.
ADVANCED TURBO SYSTEMS products have always been built to
the highest level of engineering standards and there is no finer system on
the market today. We challenge diesel owners to find a better system at any
price!
EXCELLENT TURBO APPLICATION The Ford/Navistar 6.9/7.3 liter
diesel engines are well suited for turbo charging. These engines have many
features normally found only on industrial and heavy duty commercial
diesels. These features include forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods
with (4) bolt main bearing caps, gear driven drive train including a gear
driven oil pump, valve rotators on all valves, exhaust valve inserts, oil
cooled pistons and an integral tube type oil cooler. In addition the 7.3 has
web bracing to strengthen the block, better air flow in the heads and the
head bolts are increased from 7/16 " to 1/2". The angle in which the glow
plugs enter the pre-combustion chamber has been changed to decrease the air
disturbance which results in better cylinder combustion.
INSTALLATION ATS has always had systems that are easy to
install. The new wastegate turbo is considered by many mechanics to be the
best yet. With the 3 in 1 turbo mount the turbo placement is at the top rear
of the engine, leaving the engine compartment uncluttered for normal
service. The new wastegate turbo system is a true bolt on system that fits
every 1983 through 1994 chassis model 6.9/7.3 diesel with any transmission
option. The E40D transmission requires a FORD built transmission module. All
necessary parts and a step-by-step instruction along with detailed drawings
are included in each turbo package.
ENVIRONMENT In a time when pollution is out of control and
smog fills the air, we at ATS are pleased to have a product that not only
increases rear wheel horsepower up to 50% but also eliminates the majority
of visible black smoke emitted from your diesel. This is the same black
smoke that paints your boat, camper, or RV black when towing.
PROVEN PERFORMANCE With the up to 50% horsepower increase
at the rear wheels and low end torque that is achieved through turbo
charging the 6-9/7.3 L diesel, towing and mountain driving becomes a
distinct pleasure. Advanced Turbo Systems was chosen over all other
aftermarket companies to join forces with Navistar and Ford in designing the
turbocharging system which is sold as a Ford Factory option. This
association was a result of Navistar and Ford recognizing our ability to
design a superior product. Final approval of the system came only after
Navistar engineers had performed 20,000 hours of cycle testing, countless
hours of shake tests, flow tests, durability studies, inspections and dyno
testing to tough O.E.M. specifications. The results of the ATS design and
Navistar's O.E. level testing and refinements is a system unmatched by any
aftermarket product for reliability and performance. This joint venture was
so successful that some competitors use it as their benchmark in misleading
advertising.
SERVICEABILITY By removing the air filter assembly, one can
remove the fuel injection pump, injectors and glow plugs without disturbing
the turbo system. Also by removing the final exhaust pipe one can remove the
transmission without disturbing the rest of the system. This is made
possible because of the cast "Y" and turbine inlet casting. If service is
necessary ATS dealers across the country can help you. If an ATS dealer is
not convenient you can get qualified service at most Ford dealers because of
the similarities in turbo packages. The heart of any system is naturally the
turbo. Most turbo kits use various components from different turbochargers
to match the engine as close as possible. As the ATS system was designed for
an O.E.M. application, Garret, the acknowledged leader in turbocharger
technology, designed and manufactured a turbocharger specifically for this
engine. The Garret turbocharger exactly matches the engine's intake and
exhaust flow requirements for maximum performance. Additionally, as an O.E.M.
component, parts availability and serviceability are unsurpassed.
